![]() Shandaken, a Dutch name, is in Ulster County, near Woodstock and Hunter Mountain. These signs of France are hidden 150 miles north of New York City, in the un-French-sounding village of Shandaken, a half-hour north and a world away from the turf once known as the Borscht Belt. Ici, on parle francais one plays petanque on weekend mornings one skis, hunts, fishes, all delights of the French one listens to Charles Aznavour records with a glass of Pernod in hand, and one savors an elegant sauce a l'homard, an enticing poulet au calvados, some addictive crepes. Now, 30 years after these homesick visions of a world left behind, the Catskill landscape they viewed has become a bit of France. ![]() In the decade following World War II, some expatriate Frenchmen looked at a region of the Catskills and saw the Jura mountain range others saw the valleys and trout-filled streams by the Pyrenees, or touches of Besancon, or the greenery of Alsace. ![]()
